Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI)

Mae Fah Luang-Chang Rai International Airport serves the city of Chiang Rai in northern Thailand.

The airport is situated about eight km from downtown Chiang Rai. Though the airport has been named as an international airport, it has not yet started handling international flights. However, it handles immigration of connecting THAI flights of international cities, like Melbourne-Bangkok-Chiang Rai.

The airport is linked to the Phahonyothin Road (Superhighway) by an access road. The Superhighway leads southwards towards downtown Chiang Mai, Bust Terminal II and then to Bangkok, and northwards towards Mae Chan, Mae Sai and then to the Thailand-Myanmar international border. A number of car rentals are available on the 1st floor of the terminal. Other modes of transportation are taxis, airport shuttle and hotel transfer services. While catching a taxi, you should determine some terms of your own beforehand, like the taxi should carry multiple people and your luggage, etc. Most of the taxis demand advance payment, with driver deciding the fare.
Another newly built Vhiangburapha Road also leads towards the city center and is less congested, since it is not utilized by the intercity buses heading northwards. This road links with Superhighway via Pao Khun Road, which goes by Chiang Rai Provincial Stadium.

Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai Airport provides a good shopping opportunity with its variety of souvenir and other shops, which sell a variety of goods, which include local handicrafts, silk clothes and wooden items, along with electronic goods, foods, liquors etc.

The single terminal of the airport features outlets of Dairy Queen and Black Canyon Coffee. 2nd floor houses Chiangrai Restaurant with 160 seats. It is operational from 8 am to 8.30 pm. Other two places to get authentic Thai dishes are Yellow Orchid Restaurant, serving dishes like Khao Mok Kai and Pad Thai, and Café DoiTung, serving coffee and desserts.

The airport features a number of good hotels in its vicinity. One such hotel is Teak Garden Villa & Spa, which features free Wi-Fi, outdoor pool, fitness center, AC rooms equipped with cable/satellite TV, mini bar and tea-coffee making facilities, and business facilities like banquet hall, conference rooms, ticket service and many other amenities.

Other remarkable hotel near the airport is Treehouse Residence Chiangrai, which offers Wi-Fi connection, AC rooms with flat-screen TV and tea-coffee making facilities, high-speed internet, and wireless internet onsite, in addition to vicinity to city attractions like King Mengrai Monument.

Similarly, YMCA International Hotel Chiang Rai too features vicinity to the airport and a number of facilities like well-equipped AC rooms, outdoor pool, massage, and much more.

A number of other hotels too are in the vicinity of the airport, like Mohnfahsai Home Resort Chiang Rai, Naga Hill Resort Chiang Rai, Baan Lanna Hotel, and many others. All these restaurants have their own onsite restaurants and bars, to let guests relax with tasty meals and classy drinks.
